Handbook of common parasitoids and predators associated with bagworms and nettle caterpillars in oil palm plantations
A guide for the identification of common parasitoids and predators affecting pests, such as Darna diducta, Darna trima, Mahasena corbetti, Metisa plana, Pteroma pendula and Setora nitens, in oil palm in Peninsular Malaysia is presented. The listed parasitoids and predators are the most commonly encountered, based on records of the Palm Oil Research Institute of Malaysia (PORIM). They include: Buysmania oxymora, Brachymeria lasus, Apanteles aluella, Sycanus dichotomus, Brachymeria carinata, Aulosaphes psychidivorus, Tetrastichus sp., Sturmia inconspicuoides, Exorista psychidarum, Carcelia sp., Brachymeria lugubris, Goryphus bunoh, Sympiesis sp., Aphanogmus thylax, Pediobius elasmi, Eurytoma sp., Eupelmus catoxanthae, Sympiesis sp., Pediobius elasmi, Paraphylax varius, Dolichogenidea metesae, Eurytoma sp., Aulosaphes psychidivorus, Elasmus sp., Brachymeria carinata, Sycanus dichotomus, Cosmolestes picticeps, Callimerus arcufer, Spinaria spinator, Cantheconidea sp. and Eucanthecona sp. These relatively small insects play a significant role in regulating the pest populations in the field. By careful application and selective use of insecticides adverse effect on the population of the beneficial insects can be avoided.
