Tropical peat ecosystem the frequently asked questions
All lowland peatlands are considered as wetlands but not all wetlands are peat. Wetlands are a widespread feature of the landscape throughout the world. Three distinguished features of wetlands are: (i) the presence of water at or near the landsurface, (ii) unique soil conditions that are most often characterised by low oxygen content, and (iii) specialised biota, particularly plants, that are adapted to grow in these environments.
