Techniques in Plantation Science Series Nursery Screening for Ganoderma Response in Oil Palm Seedlings: A Manual
As noted in the Foreword to this Series, a central objective in Verdant
Bioscience’s mission is to sell better varieties of oil palm, rubber and other
plantation crops through plant breeding. Essential to this objective is that
the seedlings fulfil as far as possible their genetic potential, while at the
same time being part of a sustainable plantation system. Therefore, one of
the major breeding objectives for oil palm improvement, in line with the
major need for sustainability, is the development of disease-resistant var
-
ieties.
Ganoderma
is the biggest disease problem of oil palm in South-east
Asia and the number one target for disease resistance breeding in this part of
the world. Interestingly, in many of the African countries, the major disease
problem is
Fusarium
rather than
Ganoderma
. Effective breeding requires
the identification of germplasm resistant to
Ganoderma
and the screening
and selection of progenies and palms from crossing programmes in order
to improve the resistance levels in the commercially grown seed. Early and
rapid screens are needed to allow a sufficiently effective and high selection
pressure to be imposed in order to increase the chances of identifying us-
able levels of resistance. Here, we present methods in a seedling screen for
Ganoderma
resistance/susceptibility in oil palm, which means large num-
bers of seedlings can be screened at the nursery level, and hence allow large
numbers to be handled. The results of such selection will give palms, fam-
ilies and populations that can be used in further selection or advancement
to commercialization. These then will be grown in a system that also uses
appropriate husbandry techniques and biological controls, which in unison
prevent or reduce
Ganoderma
incidence, in other words, in integrated man-
agement systems. Our target audiences are students and researchers in agri-
culture, plant pathologists, plant breeders, growers and end-users interested
in the practicalities of oil palm breeding.
